TEAM

Catalpa is headed by Joseph McAlinden, who, in his former role as Chief Investment Officer of Morgan Stanley Investment Management, oversaw more than $400 billion invested across multiple asset classes, strategies, and global markets. Catalpa’s team has more than 70 years of combined experience in portfolio management, economic analysis, asset allocation, and trading in the global markets. In addition to portfolio management services, the team also produces the McAlinden Research publications.


Joseph J. McAlinden, CFA

Joe McAlinden (“Joe Mac”) is the chief investment officer at Catalpa and has 50 years of investment experience. Previously, he was at Morgan Stanley Investment Management for over 12 years, first as chief investment officer and then as chief global strategist where he articulated the firm’s investment policy and outlook. Prior to Morgan Stanley, Mr. McAlinden was chief investment officer and chairman of the investment review committee of Dillon Read. Before that, he held a number or positions at Argus Research, ultimately serving as President and CEO. Mr. McAlinden was a research analyst and trader at W.E. Burnet & Co prior to joining Argus, and he began his career on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

Mr. McAlinden received a B.A. cum laude in Economics from Rutgers University and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He has served on the Board of The New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA), the Board of the Convent of the Sacred Heart, and the New York Regional Board of The American Ireland Fund.


Warren Hatch, PhD, CFA

Warren Hatch is the chief investment strategist at Catalpa and has 15 years of industry experience. Previously, he was a portfolio manager and an investment strategist on the Global Strategy team at Morgan Stanley Investment, and prior to that he was a research associate at Queen Elizabeth House in Oxford, England.

Dr. Hatch received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Oxford, an M.A. in Russian and International Policy Studies from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and a B.A. in History from the University of Utah. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.


Joseph S. McAlinden, CAIA

Joseph McAlinden brings 18 years of trading experience to Catalpa. Previously, he was a trader on the High Yield Fixed Income desk at Bear Stearns. In addition to trading fixed income products, Mr. McAlinden was the proprietary equity trader for the Distressed/Special Situations Desk focusing on post-bankruptcy equities. Prior to Bear Stearns he worked on the Floor of the NYSE for Merrill Lynch Specialists Inc. and Walter N Frank & Co. Mr. McAlinden received a B.A. in Economics from Hartwick College.


Nelly Nyambi

Nelly Nyambi is the director of client services and marketing at Catalpa and has over 14 years of industry experience. Previously, she was at PMA Investment Advisors, an emerging markets Asia hedge fund group, and managed the firm’s relationships with pension funds, endowments, family offices, and funds-of-funds across North America. Prior to PMA, she also held institutional client-facing positions at Altura Capital and Citigroup. Ms. Nyambi received a B.A. in Economics from Columbia University and she speaks English, French and Spanish.
